Accompanied by a GIA report numbered 5221821231, dated 20 March 2024, stating that the 30.10-carat Very Light Pink diamond is natural, VVS2 clarity; along with a Diamond Type Classification report stating that the diamond has been determined to be a Type IIa diamond with pink colour. "Type I and II diamonds contain little if any nitrogen and they are subdivided into two groups (IIa and IIb) both of which are quite rare (less than 2% of all gem diamonds)... This type IIa diamond is very rare in nature, often have relatively few inclusions and are noted for their mostly homogenous colour in the rough. Type IIa diamonds with pink colour have been found in a number of mining regions around the world. Historically they were found in India (particularly from Golconda region)."

Pink diamonds are exceedingly rare in nature. It is estimated that only one in 10,000 gem quality diamonds produced in the world show noticeable colour and of these a similarly small percentage are pink, the majority under 2.00 carats in size. How they occur is romantically enigmatic; unlike most other coloured diamonds, their colour is caused not by trace elements in their chemical composition but by a lucky miracle of nature, a distortion within their atomic lattice caused by the pressure exerted on them during their formation.
Round Brilliant-Cut
The round brilliant-cut has traditionally a higher percentage of wastage from the original rough material compared to other diamond cuts. The result is an approximate 30% higher commanding prices in round stones to other shapes. This makes the 30.10 carats very light pink diamond on offer at the Bonhams Hong Kong Autumn sale an exceptionally rare example combining, size, colour, shape and quality, making it a true collectors stone.
Type IIa: 'Purest of the Pure'
Less than 1% of diamonds worldwide are classified as Type IIa, often referred to as the 'Purest of the Pure'. These diamonds exhibit exceptional brilliance and sparkle. This purity is derived from the total lack of nitrogen in the chemical structure, giving these stones a superior optical quality. Type IIa diamonds remain highly prized by collectors and investors seeking out the highest quality diamonds.
Famed Pink Diamonds in Royal Collections
Throughout millennia of diamond mining, pink diamonds have been unearthed only occasionally, historically in India and later in Brazil, Indonesia and South Africa. The best specimens have been kept as treasures in the collections of royalty, rulers and museums, sought after and celebrated for their elusive beauty.
One of the most notable examples in a Royal Collection is the 'Williamson Pink', gifted to the late Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom in 1947 by the Canadian geologist John Williamson on the occasion of her marriage to Prince Philip of Greece. The round-brilliant-cut pink diamond of 23.60 carats was discovered in Tanzania and cut from a rough stone originally weighing 54.50 carats. The finished stone was mounted in a striking flower brooch designed by Cartier, which was worn by the late Queen on many occasions throughout her reign.
Type IIa
