Provenance
Purchased by the present owner's parents in the early 1950s

The present compositions were popular among Marieschi's followers, with a number of versions of each existing with differences to the figures and boats.

The compositions depict two views of Venice's largest channel, the Grand Canal. The former shows one of the last churches to be built in Venice, San Simeone Piccolo, on the left, opposite the Chiesa degli Scalzi on the right. This view now looks very different; the buildings to the left of the Chiesa degli Scalzi, including the church of Santa Lucia just visible in the present work, were demolished in favour of the Venezia Santa Lucia railway station, circa 1860. The latter view is situated at the entrance to the Cannaregio, with San Geremia and the Palazzo Labia on the left, and the Ponte delle Guglie ('bridge of the obelisks') spanning the canal in the distance.
