Footnotes

Provenance
Désiré Bouillard, France, 19th Century (Lugt 731).

The collector's stamp of initials 'DB' and a triangle, has not been fully attributed. The mark was first listed in 1883 by Louis Fagan in Collectors' Marks, who referenced it as 'D. Bouillard. Engraver' (n.135). In 2016 Pierre Juhel published Les ventes publiques d'estampes à Paris sous la Troisième République, proposing the name of Jean François Désiré Bouillard (1824-1900)(n.119).
This mark has appeared on other prints including Pan and Apollo, possibly by Jan de Bisschop, in the Library of Congress in Washington.
