WALCOTT (DEREK)

25 Poems, second edition, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on the half-title to "The Editor, Poetry Quarterly, compliments of Derek Walcott", publisher's wrappers, light soiling and wear, 8vo, Bridgetown, Barbados, Advocate Company, [April] 1949

Footnotes

PRESENTATION COPY OF NOBEL PRIZE-WINNING DEREK WALCOTT'S VERY SCARCE FIRST BOOK OF POEMS, inscribed to the editor of Poetry Quarterly, the poet Charles Wrey Gardiner (1901-1981), editor of the influential poetry magazine from 1940 to 1953.

"My first book of poems was published privately in 1949," Walcott recalls, smiling. "That was my mother. The book was 25 Poems. It cost 200 dollars" (interview with James Campbell, The Guardian, 4 October 2008). First published in January 1949, this second edition appeared in April of the same year. This printing was issued in both cloth and, as here, in wrappers. All the issues are exceedingly rare.
