Fragment of blue silk ribbon sewn onto a nineteenth-century note of provenance, presumably copying out an old label ("A portion of the Ribbon worn by King Charles the 1st when he was beheaded Jany 30. 1649" and "Given by King Charles 1st to Bishop Juxon, by the Bishop to his son, & by his son to his nephew the late Sir William Juxon, of whom Mrs Vyner had it, and was so good to make me [sic] a present of it Nov 20th 1741/ Gandby Hall, Lincolnshire/ J. Naish.../ Presented to Martha H.G. Jervis by Rear Admiral Harper, C.B./ July 1854"), ribbon c.10 x 73mm., notes on two pages of a bifolium, 8vo (176 x 113mm.)

Footnotes

A pale blue silk undervest reputedly worn by Charles I at his execution, and in a similar shade of blue to our ribbon, was displayed at the Museum of London as part of their Executions exhibition, October 2022 to April 2023.

Provenance: Reputedly given by Charles I to William Juxon (1582-1663), Bishop of London; his nephew William Juxon Bt (1637-c.1719); "Mrs Vyner"; J. Naish, jnr., Gandby Hall, Lincolnshire, 1741; Rear Admiral John Harper C.B.(1772-1855); Martha Honora Georgiana Ricketts (Jervis, 1794-1865); Colonel E.H.B. Lysons; by descent to J.M.C. Lysons (1924-2018) and then to the present owner.
