Footnotes

FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT MARITIME ATLASES OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY.

Jacques Nicolas Bellin served as the official royal hydrographer and "ingenieur geographe de la marine et du Depot des Cartes et Plans". His duties involved assembling atlases of nautical charts for both military and governmental purposes, as well as for public distribution. As NMM states, although "many of the maps are reproductions in reduced size of maps and charts occurring in Bellin's previous atlases[...] there is also a large amount of fresh material." It features maps of the world and continents, as well as numerous regional maps and city plans, including those of Quebec, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and New Orleans.

The contents of the five volumes are arranged geographically: volume I L'Amérique septentrionale (102 maps); volume II L'Amérique meridionale (90 maps, including 61*); volume III, Part 1. L'Asie; Part 2. L'Afrique (127 maps in total for both parts, including [3bis], 92*, 95*); volume IV L'Europe (130 maps, including 50*, 109*); volume V Les costes de France (132 maps).

Provenance: Dr Jules Sottas (1866-1945, neurologist, historian and author of works on the East India Company, navigation, etc.), bookplates.
