Panoplia [in Greek] Omnium illiberalium mechanicarum aut sedentariarum artium genera continens, first edition in Latin, 132 woodcut illustrations by Jost Amman, blank verso of A8 with a FULL-PAGE NEAR CONTEMPORARY PEN AND WATERCOLOUR ILLUSTRATION OF A SCHOLAR standing beside a book on a lectern, beneath a banner with the legend "V.I.D. Anno Ætatis Suæ 23" in gilt, and an emblem of an owl on a shield surrounded by leaves and the motto "Prudens qua[m] loquax magi", lettered "Dola. anno 1583..." in ink below, some leaves with small ink caption in French in upper margin, crushed brown morocco gilt by Hardy-Mennil (gilt stamp inside upper cover), covers with 3-line filet border enclosing central arabesque of flowers and leaves, spine tooled in six compartments within raised bands, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, g.e. [Adams S702; Colas 111], 8vo, Frankfurt, [Sigismund Feyerabend], 1568

Handsomely bound copy of the first edition in Latin of Panoplia, with woodcut illustrations by Jost Amman depicting trades and crafts (bookbinders, clock makers, painters and printers, armourers, weavers, spectacle makers, hunters, etc.) and verses by Schooper. This copy is embellished with a watercolour of a 23-year old scholar, with the emblem of an owl and motto "Prudens qua[m] loquax magi" ["wise head, close mouth"].
