The Ginger Jar belongs to the series of still life with anemones painted between 1923 and 1925.
Hunter's biographers, Smith and Marriner note that during this period, "Hunter clearly demonstrates that he can repeatedly paint the same scene and through the use of subtly different techniques cleverly convey the distinctive, elusive moods of Nature." (Hunter Revisited: The Life and Art of Leslie Hunter, Atelier Books, Edinburgh 2012, p.85). As with his landscapes, Hunter's still life is unmistakably deep and real.
The Glasgow Herald's critic in 1925 goes further, lauding Hunter's still life as "strong and striking in design and gorgeous in their colour harmonies.
(Glasgow Herald, 17 December 1925, p.11 g).
Bonhams would like to thank Jill Marriner for her assistance with this footnote.
