Born on 29 February 1917 in Bắc Giang, Vietnam, Tạ Thuc Binh is a celebrated artist known for his profound contributions to Vietnamese art and culture. His foray into the realm of art began in 1940 when he enrolled at the Indochina College of Fine Arts, where he studied alongside notable artists such as Bui Xuan Phai and Nguyen Tu Ngheim.

Tạ Thuc Binh's artistic career has been defined by his versatility and dedication to various forms of visual art, notably, his work in propaganda posters, book illustrations and children's literature. His illustrations have graced the pages of numerous historical and children's books, particularly in those published by Kim Đồng Publishing House, where he designed the iconic logo of a bamboo shoot and red star.

During the war of resistance against the French, Tạ Thuc Binh, like many artists of his time, played an active role to aid the national cause through his art. The works created during this period frequently explored themes of patriotism and resilience, encapsulating the spirit of the Vietnamese people. After the liberation of northern Vietnam in 1954, Tạ Thuc Binh held a pivotal role in the reconstruction of the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, where he served as a teaching faculty member until his retirement.

The legacy of Tạ Thuc Binh extends beyond his illustrations and teaching. He created hundreds of portraits, including national heroes such as Nguyen Trãi and Tran Hung Dao. His art is characterised by its simplicity and a deep-rooted affiliation to the rural Vietnamese way of life, reflecting his roots in Kinh Bac.

Tạ Thuc Binh's contributions to the field of Vietnamese art are invaluable. His works continue to serve as a source of inspiration and education for future generations, ensuring that his artistic spirit endures. His dedication to his craft and his country makes him a revered figure in the history of Vietnamese art.
