Provenance:
André Kirchberger Collection, Ems, sold at Cassirer & Helbing, Berlin, 22 November 1927, lot 101;
The Property of a Gentleman, sold at Christie's London, 28 November 1975, lot 163
The model is first mentioned in Kaendler's work notes in April 1744: "Eine Zur Italienischen Comödie gehörige Fügur, Doctor genannt, Corrigiret, und zerschnitten und selbige zum abformen befördert, Welche ebenfalls Vor den Hertzog von Weißenfels bestellet sind" [a figure belonging to the Italian Comedy called Doctor, corrected and cut and forwarded for moulding, which is also ordered by the Duke of Weissenfels]. There is also mention in Reinicke's work notes for May 1744 of "eine Figur, einen Doctor vorstellend, 7. Zoll hoch in Thon bossirt" [a figure depicting a doctor, 7 inches high repaired in clay"]. The figure is loosely based upon François Joullain's engraving "Habit de Docteur Ancien;" see Meredith Chilton, Harlequin Unmasked, 2001, p. 310, cat. 106.
