A Meissen figure of Pulcinella dancing, circa 1745


Modelled by J.J. Kaendler or P. Reinicke, holding a slapstick in his left hand, wearing a gilt-edged yellow pointed hat with puce ribbon and rosette, a tunic with a panels of coloured chevrons, a solid blue ground and playing cards scattered on white and, puce trousers and yellow shoes with puce rosettes, the base applied with leaves, 16cm high, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue to rear of base (very minor damage)

The figure may be the one recorded in Reinicke's work notes in May 1744: "Ein Porcenell 7. Zoll hoch in Thon angefangen" [a Pulcinella 7 in. high begun in clay]; and in June: "Den Porconell, so bereits im vorigen Monath angefangen gewesen, vollends fertig in Thon bossirt" [the Pulcinella, already begun the previous month, completely finished repairing in clay]. A similar example in the Alan Shimmerman Collection is illustrated in Vanessa Sigalas and Meredith Chilton (eds.), All Walks of Life, 2022, cat. 135.
