A Meissen group of the "Indiscreet Harlequin," circa 1740-45


Modelled by J.J. Kaendler, the amorous couple seated on rockwork while on the ground Harlequin lifts her dress, the gentleman wearing a yellow hat, turquoise waistcoat with yellow bow, black breeches with yellow rosettes, and yellow shoes with blue bows, the lady wearing a blue small tricorn hat, red bodice, pale salmon-pink dress painted with sprigs of indianische Blumen, and grey shoes with turquoise bows, Harlequin wearing a jacket with blue, red and white chevron pattern and puce-striped trousers, the base applied with leaves and flowers, 16.5cm high (some restoration to extremities)

It has been suggested that depiction of the lovers in this group may be based on engravings by Petrus Schenck after drawings by Gérard-Joseph Xavert, "Les Amours de Columbine," or an engraving of the painting "L'Automne" by Nicolas Lancret of around 1738; see Vanessa Sigalas and Meredith Chilton (eds.), All Walks of Life, 2022, cat. 145, for a similar group in the Alan Shimmerman Collection. Another example of this group is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, inv. 1982.60.303.
