It has been suggested that depiction of the lovers in this group may be based on engravings by Petrus Schenck after drawings by Gérard-Joseph Xavert, "Les Amours de Columbine," or an engraving of the painting "L'Automne" by Nicolas Lancret of around 1738; see Vanessa Sigalas and Meredith Chilton (eds.), All Walks of Life, 2022, cat. 145, for a similar group in the Alan Shimmerman Collection. Another example of this group is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, inv. 1982.60.303.
