A set of eight Meissen commedia dell'arte figures of children, circa 1765


Each on gilt-edged scrollwork base, depicting (from left to right): Capitano, Scapin (or possibly Scaramouche), Harlequine, Harlequin, Columbine, Harlequine (undecorated), Pulcinella, and Mezzetin, 11.5cm-12.8cm, seven with impressed 24 of which two (Scaramouche and Harlequin) have a crossed swords mark in blue, one with crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue to rear of base and incised e (minor chips and restoration) (8)

From a series of children dressed in Italian Comedy costumes ordered by a Herr von Kayßerling in 1765 and which was added to until at least 1775 (cf. Rainer Rückert, Meissener Porzellan 1710-1810, 1966, cats. 1013 and 1014). Other examples from the series are in the Gardiner Museum, Toronto (ill.
