Footnotes

Provenance:
The Property of a Lady, sold at Christie's London, 9 April 1979, lot 149

Deceptively titled "Avvocato," or lawyer, the costume and posture of this masked figure do not in fact have any affiliation with the legal profession but rather were derived from a type of costume worn by men and women seeking to remain anonymous during Carnival in Venice, hence the white mask, voluminous cape with baggy sleeves, and cowl. See Meredith Chilton, Harlequin Unmasked, 2001, p. 58.
