Footnotes

Provenance:
Anon. sale ("Sammlung A. B., Berlin"), sold at Rudolph Lepke's Kunst-Auctions-Haus, Berlin, 15-17 October 1929, lot 441

Reinicke based this figure on an engraved illustration entitled "Habit de Giangurgolo calabrois" by François Joullain (1697-1778) published in Luigi Riccoboni's Histoire du théâtre Italien, 1728-1731. The figure is mentioned in Reinicke's work records in August 1744: "Einen detto, Giangurgola, Calobrie, wie vorgehends, zur Italienischen Comoedie in Thon bousiirt" [one ditto, Giangurgolo Calabrois, as the preceding, repaired in clay for the Italian Comedy].
