A Meissen figure of Scapino from the Duke of Weissenfels series, circa 1745


Modelled by P. Reinicke, wearing a white jacket with gilt frogging, a gilt-edged puce cape, black trousers and yellow shoes with red bows, the base applied with leaves and flowers, 13.3cm high, traces of crossed swords mark in blue (very minor restoration)

After the engraving "Habit de Scapin" by François Joullain in Luigi Riccoboni's Histoire du Théâtre Italien, 1728. The figure is listed in Reinicke's work notes for July 1744: "1. Scapin, 7 zoll hoch, zur Italienischer Comödie, in Thon bossirt" [1 Scapin, 7 zoll high, for the Italian Comedy, repaired in clay]. See Meredith Chilton, Harlequin Unmasked, 2001, p. 308, cat. 101.
