Helmets from the second half of the fourteenth century were increasingly equipped with mail aventails (camails), providing protection for the lower part of the head and neck. There are unfortunately no representative illustrations of Egyptian or Syrian armour from the mid-fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, but many of the surviving pieces are from these areas. A Mamluk helmet in the Furusiyya Art Foundation Collection of similar domed form to the present lot also features holes to the rim indicating the previous presence of such a protective aventail (see Bashir Mohamed, The Arts of the Muslim Knight, the Furisiyya Art Foundation Collection, 2007, p 316, no. 303).
