Footnotes

Henry Lawrence was Political Agent at Lahore, 1846-48, handling relations with the Sikhs after their defeat at Sobraon and the imposition of British suzerainty over the Punjab. A council of regency was set up, accompanied by a garrison, to rule until Duleep Singh came of age. For his portrait (in the British Library) see S. Stronge (ed.), The Arts of the Sikh Kingdoms, London 1999, p. 151, fig. 173. As well as this account, he was also author of the earlier Some Passages in the Life of an Adventurer in the Punjaub (1842).
