The author was Extra Assistant Commissioner at Delhi. Volume I deals with the general principles of the Sikh religion, and discusses Guru Nanak and the other Gurus, before moving on to the Sikh misls and other states, followed by Maharajah Ranjit Singh and his successors. Volume II returns to religion, combining history and philosophical discussion (e.g. 'Actions, Duty and Morals'), then the Khalsa and other matters, ending with hymns in gurmukhi script.

The front flyleaf of both volumes are inscribed by a G. S. C. Black [?], of the 32nd Lancers, 'from Jemadar Harnam Singh, A/R Squadron', Nasirabad, 2nd July 1919.
