Footnotes

Provenance
Private collection, Germany.

The painting perhaps derives from a Rasraj of Matiram series. Matiram's poetry, written between 1633 and 1643, takes its place alongside the better known works of the late 16th and 17th Century, the Rasikapriya of Keshavdas and the Sat Sai of Bihari Lal. All consist of classical erotically-themed poems, but the Rasraj is defined as of the ritikal genre - mannered and ornamented.
