A gilt-silver overlaid steel push dagger (katar)
Kutch, 18th/ 19th Century

the double-edged steel blade with chiselled spine and two fullers, with armour piercing tip, engraved and overlaid in silver-gilt to the forte with an elephant hunting scene to one side, the other side with a mounted horseman, the hilt overlaid in silver-gilt with grips in the form of addorsed tigers, the curved sidebars engraved and decorated with floral scrollwork, the wood scabbard clad in red velvet with gilt-copper mounts decorated in repoussé with floral and foliate interlace, suspension loop to one side
40.5 cm. long

The curving form of the sidebars of the present lot is distinctive of Kutch push daggers. An example of a Kutch katar with comparable curved sidebars is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Accession No. 3404&A/(IS)).
