Footnotes

The incorporation of various animals on a foliate ground is seen in the decoration on an extremely fine Deccani salver dated to circa 1600 in the Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Museum of Indian Art, Hyderabad, illustrated in M. Zebrowski, Gold, Silver & Bronze from Mughal India, London, 1997, p. 334-5 & 353, no. 546 & 580. This example features very similar animals to those depicted on the present lot, in addition to comparable scrolling foliate bands, indicating a similar area and date of production. A Deccani cast silver ewer of very similar form in the National Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen, is also illustrated in the same publication (Zebrowski, p. 154, no. 202).
