A very rare Giles gilded facet stem goblet, circa 1770

Decorated in the London workshop of James Giles, the generous ogee bowl decorated with three crossed ears of barley, scattered floral sprigs to the reverse, all below a fine border of flowerheads and oranges or apples, alternating with fruiting vine, the rim edge gilt, the base cut with facets extending into a diamond faceted stem, over a conical foot, 18.9cm high

Footnotes

Provenance
Leuba Collection

The decoration on this goblet is highly unusual. Whilst the barley would suggest it was used for ale, the fruit around the rim indicates that it could also have serves as a goblet for wine or champagne, cider, or perhaps punch. An identical goblet, also from the Leuba Collection, was sold by Bonhams on 13 December 2023, lot 168.
