A Copeland cabinet plate by Charles Ferdinand Hürten, circa 1880

Of octagonal form with a crimped rim, the reticulated border richly enamelled and gilt in Japanese style, the centre finely painted with a flowering cactus, signed 'C.F.Hürten', 23.3cm wide, impressed COPELAND'S CHINA

Footnotes

The intricate 'jewelled' border is reminiscent of cloisonné and exemplifies the Aesthetic taste inspired by Japanese art and so popular in Europe and America in the 1870s and 1880s. A similar plate painted with water lilies is in the Art Institute of Chicago (inv. no.1988.245).
