Provenance
Bonhams, 18 May 2016, lot 374
Charles Dawson Collection

Illustrated by Charles Dawson, Worcester Flight & Barr Porcelain (2023), p.196, fig.18.14 and by Henry Sandon, Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain (1978), p.141, pl.128. Thomas Gray's poem 'The Bard' was published in 1757 and describes the last-surviving Welsh bard cursing Edward I before throwing himself in the River Conway. Thomas Baxter may have been inspired by Benjamin West's painting, now in the Tate Gallery. The quotation reads 'Love his beard and hoary hair stream'd like a meteor to the troubled air'.
