This important service was first recorded when it appeared at auction in 1894, where it reportedly made the huge sum of £496. The nomenclature, dating and the artist responsible is discussed by Rachel C Denyer, Morgan C T Denyer and Howell G M Edwards, The Pendock Barry Porcelain Service, A Forensic Evaluation (2023). Although William Billingsley had left the Derby factory by the time of manufacture, the authors suggest that the roses were painted by him as an independent decorator whilst running his establishment at Torksey. Another plate from the service was sold by Bonhams on 21 June 2023, lot 431.
