An impressive Chelsea-Derby vase and cover, circa 1780

Of classical form with biscuit handles in the form of winged maidens, the shoulder moulded in relief with masks and lions picked out in tooled gold, painted with the Three Graces, the reverse with figures within an extensive river landscape, within oval panels reserved on a ground of gilded stripes, the square foot marbled, 40cm high, patch marks, incised No 86 and JW monogram (2)

Illustrated by John Twitchett, Derby Porcelain (1980), p.141, pl.153 (right) alongside another similar vase now in the Derby Museum and Art Gallery and illustrated by Gilbert Bradley, Derby Porcelain 1750-1798 (1990), p.104 and dust jacket. Figural painting in this style is traditionally attributed to Richard Askew, the landscape probably by Zachariah Boreman.
