The scene on this goblet is after an engraving of Summer (Aestas) by Pieter van der Heyden, published in 1570, after an original drawing by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. It formed part of a series of The Seasons and depicts activities traditionally associated with the months of June (fruit picking), July (hay harvesting) and August (corn harvesting). Spring is the only other engraving in the series to be completed to a design by Breugel.
An identical goblet engraved with scene allegorical of the month of February, almost certainly from the same original set as the present lot, is illustrated by Brigitte Klesse, Glassammlung Helfried Krug (1965), no.156, where it is attributed to Nuremberg. Another identical goblet decorated with nude figures is illustrated by Christopher Sheppard and John Smith, Engraved Glass: Masterpieces from Holland (1990), pp.30-31, no.11. This is thought to be by the same hand as an armorial beaker and cover of circa 1668 engraved with scenes of falconry in the collection of Kasteel Amerongen, illustrated and discussed by Pieter C Ritsema van Eck, 'Early Wheel Engraving in the Netherlands', Journal of Glass Studies, vol.26 (1984), pp.94-95, figs.24-25.
