A rare pair of Worcester cauliflower tureens, covers and stands, circa 1758-60

Naturalistically modelled as single heads of cauliflower, the florets left white, the leaves painted in shades of green and pale yellow, butterflies printed in black resting between the stalks, the stands modelled as a single leaf moulded with delicate veins, applied with curled stalk handles, edged in green and with three butterflies or moths at each centre, tureens 10cm high, stands 18cm wide (6)

Footnotes

It may be that Worcester created these tureens by taking a mould from an actual cauliflower. In any case, these beguiling brassicas would have appealed to the mid-18th century taste for naturalistic forms on the dinner table. The printed butterflies are in-keeping with this aesthetic but also serve to highlight the relatively new and wholly English technology of overglaze printing on porcelain. A pair of undecorated Worcester Cauliflowers from the Zorensky Collection was sold by Bonhams on 16 March 2004, lot 40.
