Footnotes

Provenance
Susi and Ian Sutherland Collection, Bonhams, 3 October 2007, lot 186
Geoffrey Godden Collection, Bonhams, 30 June 2010, lot 69

The tureen would have been a remarkable achievement in terms of its size and the complexity of the decoration in the first few years of production at Worcester. Another covered tureen of the same shape in The Museum of Royal Worcester is illustrated by John Sandon, Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain (1993), p.343, col.pl.90. The same basic form with moulded panels and a dolphin finial is also recorded by Branyan, French and Sandon (1989), pattern I.A.11. The 'Two-Level Fence and Rock' pattern was used on large-scale pieces, including a punch pot and an octagonal serving dish illustrated by Bernard Watney, English Blue and White Porcelain (1973), pl.28B.
