A rare and early Worcester mug, circa 1752-53

Of bell-shape on a spreading foot, painted in blue with a version of the 'Willow Root' pattern, a 'Long Eliza' figure standing between two fences and a gnarled willow tree, a figure in a boat before a rocky island, comma motifs at the handle terminals, 9.3cm high

Footnotes

Provenance
Weston Taylor Collection

This early shape has an appealing wide belly over a neatly turned footrim, the body also gently flattened in its profile. The form is comparable to a mug in the Susi and Ian Sutherland Collection sold by Bonhams on 3 October 2007, lot 146, but the unusual interpretation of the 'Willow Root' pattern more akin to that exhibited on lot 145 in that sale. Elements of the design on the present lot, such as the particularly detailed figure in a boat and the comma-like dashes to both sides of the handle terminals, also occur on a mug in the Watney Collection sold by Phillips on 22 September 1999, lot 145.
