A rare early Worcester vase, circa 1753

Of quatrelobed baluster shape, the neck applied with flattened side handles, painted in enamel colours with a pointing figure standing in front of a fence decorated with a pebble pattern, a simple plant motif on the reverse, 9.8cm high

Footnotes

This rare vase shape dates from the earliest years of the Worcester factory, when most of their output was inspired by Chinese porcelain prototypes. A very similar example painted with the same Chinese figure was in the Zorensky Collection, see John Sandon and Simon Spero, Worcester Porcelain (1996), p.80, fig 25 and front cover. This was sold by Bonhams in the Zorensky Collection on 22 February 2006, lot 15. Another very similar vase was in Simon Spero's 1995 exhibition, fig.18. For another see H Rissik Marshall, Coloured Worcester Porcelain (1954), pl.25, fig.565. Another vase of this same rare shape but with Kakiemon 'Banded Hedges' decoration from the Rous Lench Collection was sold by Bonhams on 2 November 2011, lot 73.
