An early Worcester bottle vase, circa 1753

Of simple flattened hexagonal shape, painted in colours with a 'Waiting Chinaman' standing with his arms folded in front of a low cobbled stone wall flanked by formal plants, the reverse with a simple spray of daisy-like flowers, 12.2cm high

Footnotes

Provenance
Sir Anthony Tuke Collection
With Brian Haughton Antiques, 10 December 2015

The Waiting Chinaman pattern was perfectly suited to this popular shape of bottle vase, and many examples were made during a very short period of production early in the 1750s. A pair of bottles in this pattern from the Billie Pain Collection was sold by Bonhams on 26 November 2003, lots 114 and 115. Another bottle was in the R David Butti Collection, sold by Bonhams on 10 May 2006, lot 9. A further very similar example from the Zorensky Collection is discussed in Sandon and Spero, Worcester Porcelain (1996), p.81, no.26.
