An early Worcester cream jug, circa 1753

Of simple pear shape with a sparrow beak spout, the double-scrolled handle with a delicate thumbrest, painted in bright enamel colours with a 'strutting bird' standing on one leg, flowering plants to either side including a formal lotus, with tiny insects in flight, 6.8cm high

Footnotes

Provenance
Sir Anthony Tuke Collection
With Brian Haughton Antiques, 10 December 2015

The colourful, cartoon-like birds known as 'strutting birds' are found on both Bow and Worcester porcelain in the early 1750s, and it is hard to know who was copying who. At Worcester, the pattern is mostly seen on sauceboats and only a small number of sparrow beak jugs were also produced. A very similar jug to the present lot is illustrated by John Sandon, The Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain (1993), p.320.
