A rare Chelsea figure of a Street Vendor, circa 1754-55

Probably modelled by Joseph Willems, the bearded man standing wearing a fur-lined cap and a cloak over his long buttoned waistcoat, a large travelling case containing his wares supported on a shoulder strap, holding the lid open with his right hand to reveal brightly coloured and gilt contents including necklaces, purses, buckles, scissors and other trinkets, gesturing invitingly with his left hand, on a low mound base applied with flowers and foliage, 18.6cm high, red anchor mark

Footnotes

Illustrated by Margaret Legge in Flowers and Fables, National Gallery of Victoria exhibition catalogue (1984), p.36, no.62.

The prototype for the model is thought to be the Meissen figure by Kändler and Reinicke, based on the 'Cries of Paris' watercolour by Christoph Huet, see Elizabeth Adams, Chelsea Porcelain (2001), p.128, where the model is referred to as the 'Jewish Pedlar'. A version of this figure left in the white from the Dr Peter Bradshaw Collection was sold by Bonhams on 24 January 2007, lot 11. A later Derby version, together with his female companion, is in the Lady Charlotte Schreiber Collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no.414:168-1885). Another pair of Derby figures is in the Jewish Museum of London, where the visibility and characterisation of Jewish people in England in the 18th century is discussed in the online catalogue (inv. no.JM693A).
