A South Staffordshire enamel writing box, circa 1765-70

Of rectangular form with gilt metal mounts, the cover finely painted with an extensive landscape, a figure herding a donkey, sheep and goat along a riverbank, buildings in the distance reflected in the water, four smaller vignettes including a harbour scene to the sides of the box, within gilt foliate and scrolling borders on a pink ground further ornamented with raised white enamel, the interior with gilt metal divisions containing a glass pounce pot with an enamelled lid, 15.8cm wide (3)
