A South Staffordshire enamel snuff box, circa 1765-70

Of rectangular form, printed in outline and hand-coloured with 'The Foursome', a scene depicting actors from the Italian comedy in a garden, Mezzetino seated by two ladies, Pierrot with his guitar slung over his shoulder, the base and underside painted with flowers, the panels edged with white enamel scrolls, a fine dotted diaper pattern over the sage green ground, 8.7cm wide

Footnotes

Provenance
The Hon. Nellie Ionides Collection
Thence by descent

The source is a painting by Watteau, 'La Partie Quarrée'. The scene is ambiguous, as we do not know whether these are actors at rest or aristocrats in the guise of these well-known characters for a masked ball.
