A rare pair of English enamel tapersticks, circa 1765

Probably Birmingham, with tapering spiral moulded stems and stepped square bases with gadrooned borders, gilt metal mounts at the feet, painted with green plants with gilt buds, sprouting from hollow rocks, tendrils coiled around the spiralling stems, 15.7cm high (2)

Footnotes

Larger candlesticks became an important output of South Staffordshire enamellers in the 1770s and 1780s. This unusual pair follow more closely the form of contemporary silver shapes by silversmiths like Ebenezer Coker, with a focus of gadrooned edges and spiralling motifs. The attractive green decoration recalls English porcelain decoration at this time, which featured Chinese flowers issuing from hollow rockwork.
