Footnotes

Provenance
The Hon. Nellie Ionides Collection
Thence by descent

This box belongs to a small group of English enamels with rich coloured grounds attributed to London by Eric Benton, see Eric Benton, 'The London Enamellers', ECC Trans, Vol.8, Pt.2 (1972), pl.95c for a very similar yellow-ground box. The careful flower painting is closely related, each box sharing a distinctive variegated tulip in the central bouquet. The present lot is fully enamelled to the interior and the underside of the base.
