The source is one of a series of designs by Jean-Baptiste Pillement titled 'Recueil de Plusiers Jeux d'Enfants Chinois', engraved and published by Pierre-Charles Canot in 1759. Twelve of the group are illustrated by Loren L Zeller, 'The influence of Jean Baptiste Pillement's art on ceramics', ECC Trans, Vol.31 (2020), p.166, fig.62. A similar plaque in the Lady Charlotte Schreiber Collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum is illustrated on p.167, fig.66.
