Footnotes

Provenance
The Hon. Nellie Ionides Collection
Thence by descent

The first-mentioned plaque bears an old paper label which describes the horse depicted as 'Sedbury a chestnut colt bred by Wilkinson of Boroughbridge, Yorks. Born 1734, died 1759. The best horse for his size at this time. The view portrays the Gap at Newmarket'. However, there are similarities to a painting by James Seymour of Childers with jockey up in the livery of the Duke of Devonshire, sold by Bonhams on 8 December 2004, lot 7. The source of the second-mentioned plaque is a print by Thomas Burford after James Seymour, published by Robert Sayer in 1752. Both plaques are illustrated in Therle and Bernard Hughes, English Painted Enamels, London, 1951, p.65, pl. 25, hung together in a cabinet showcasing a wide selection of other enamels previously in The Hon. Nellie Ionides Collection. The Hughes' used the Ionides Collection of enamels together with that of Her Majesty Queen Mary's to illustrate their important work.
