Provenance
Sotheby's, 1 July 1985, lot 273
With Asprey, 8 July 1985

This classic Baccarat weight was reportedly a symbol of the Revolution of 1848, the 'tricolour' recalling the national flag of France adopted in 1789. An original Baccarat drawing of a similar bouquet which was still being encased in their weights in 1851 is titled 'fleurs compliqués', both on the list of Baccarat drawings and in the Price List of 1 March 1850. A similar weight is illustrated by Paul Hollister and Dwight P Lanmon, Paperweights (1978), p.78, no.63.
