An exceptional Venetian latticinio goblet, late 16th century

Decorated in vetro a retorti with adjacent vertical bands of opaque white filigree twists, the flared trumpet bowl set on a hollow ball knop set between mereses in clear glass, over a high spreading foot neatly folded at the footrim, 17.9cm high

This most attractive shape of wine glass was made in various sizes and with many different styles of latticinio decoration, see for example lot 32 in this sale. A Venetian goblet of similar form with the same combination of adjacent vetro a retorti twists are recorded. An example in the Diageo Collection (formerly the Cinzano Glass Collection) is illustrated by Rosa Barovier Mentasti, Glass Collection della Diageo a Santa Vittoria d'Alba (2005), no.36 and dustjacket, and another in the Metropolitan Museum of Art is illustrated and discussed by Dwight P Lanmon, Glass in the Robert Lehman Collection (1993), pp.164-6, no.60. Lanmon records a total of twelve such goblets in museums and private collections, together with four further examples with whereabouts unknown at the time of publication, including the present lot.
