A rare 'excise' goblet and a plain stem goblet, circa 1740-50

The first with a generous ogee bowl on a hollow plain stem and wide folded conical foot, 20.6cm high, the other with a generous bucket bowl on a plain stem and folded conical foot, 22cm high (2)

Hollow-stemmed glasses of this type are uncommon and are thought to have been introduced at the time of the Glass Excise Act of 1745, which levied tax on glass by weight.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
