A remarkable façon de Venise reverse-painted glass picture, late 16th century

Hall-in-Tyrol or Innsbruck, cast in rectangular form, painted with The Annunciation, the Archangel Gabriel kneeling on a tiled terrace before the Virgin Mary, holding a lily in his left hand, his right raised in a gesture of benediction, Mary with her arms crossed over her chest, kneeling before a gilded wooden table bearing the initials 'N F' and raised on paw feet, upon which rests book of the Holy Scriptures, their halos and costumes picked out in gold, fruiting vine trailed around a column behind them, opening onto a distant landscape of hills and the buildings of Jerusalem, God the Father as an old man surrounded by four winged angel's heads appearing from an opening in the clouds in the sky above, within a gilded ropetwist border, in a giltwood frame, 19.9cm x 22.3cm visible image

Footnotes

There is convincing circumstantial evidence that these so-called 'Venetian' pictures and a number of related reverse-painted dishes originated in Hall-in-Tyrol. Unlike later glass pictures, these panels were individually cast or formed rather than cut from larger panes of glass, resulting in their irregular edges and uneven striated surfaces, see the Ryser Collection catalogue, Reverse Paintings on Glass (1992), pp.15-17.
