Having completed his initial training in Rome, Francesco Zuccarelli spent a very fruitful 20 years in Venice where he enjoyed early patronage from Marshal Schulenburg and Consul Joseph Smith, amongst others. It is likely that Smith played a part in Zuccarelli's move to England in 1752, where the present pair were presumably painted. It was during his second stay in England that Zuccarelli became one of the founding members of the Royal Academy of the Arts.
