Provenance
Francois Coty, Paris, early 1900s, and by descent until 2001
Private Collection, USA

We are grateful to Dr. Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution to Jean Baptist Bosschaert on the basis of colour photos. In his A Dictionary of Dutch and Flemish Still-life Painters in Oils, 1525-1725, Leiden, 2003, he states 'Nicolaes Bosschaert. Mystification. Invented name for Jan Baptist, referred to as N. Bosschaert by Weyerman, who was unaware of his first name. In probably more than one case this led to the early adoption of an N before the artist's JBosschaert signature'. Other works with N. Bosschaert signatures include: Vase of Flowers formerly in the collection of the Marquis de Marigny (see: C.G. Marcus 'Les Peintres belges du XIIIe siècle', Art et Curiosité, July 1970); and a Still life of flowers in a vase with dead game, offered at Lenormand, Dayen, May 1987, lot 130.
