The present portrait of the Empress Catherine the Great clearly enjoyed great popularity as numerous versions are known such as the work, also on copper but of slightly smaller dimensions, which is now at the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. Also at the same museum is a drawing by Evgraf Chemesov (1735-1765) showing the Empress in the same position but bust-length (see A.A. Sidorov, Drawings of Old Russian Masters, USSR Academy of Sciences, Moscow, 1956, vol. II, p.97).
The present lot is offered with a copy of an expertise certificate from the Russian National Scientific-Research Institute for Restoration (GosNIIR), from C. A. Pisareva, dated 21 June 2011.
