The Madonna of the Cherries, one of the most popular subjects in the early 16th century, was modelled on a lost prototype by Leonardo da Vinci in Milan, circa 1508-1513, and adapted by his best pupil, Giampetrino. Joos van Cleve and his workshop produced numerous versions of The Madonna of the Cherries, including works in the Suermondt-Ludwig Museum, Aachen and in the Hester Diamond Collection, New York (see: J.O. Hand, Joos van Cleve, The Complete Paintings, New Haven, 2004, pp. 185-7, cat. nos. 112-112.9).
