Provenance
With J.A. Maas, London, where purchased by the present owner's father in the 1960s
In 1772 Sandby acquired a house at 4, St George's Row, just off the Bayswater Road, where he was to spend the remaining years of his life. The present view shows the white gates of the Bayswater Turnpike in the middle distance and, in the foreground, a lady and gentleman on horseback near a group of laundresses carrying their washing in baskets on their heads. Sandby's study of a group of washerwomen drawn in graphite and brown wash is in the collection of the Yale Center for British Art (B1977.14.5133).
